How to Start the Morning

You might not be a morning person, and getting out of your bed in the morning can be a pain, but how you start off your day can make or break the rest of the day.  For the most part, David Worley Fannie Mae morning personpeople start off their day with procrastination by hitting the snooze button on their alarm clock, as opposed to seizing the morning.  It’s like the standup comedian Demitri Martin once said: hitting the snooze button in the morning doesn’t even make sense.  It’s almost like saying, “I hate getting up in the morning, so it over and over again”.  I recently came across an article with some tips for starting off the morning with a positive attitude.

Your first thought in the morning might be the same as the last one you had before you went to bed.  A lot of people have nights, such as Christmas Eve, where they can hardly fall asleep because they’re excited about waking up in the morning.  As soon as their alarm clock goes off, they jump out of bed, ready to take on the day.  If the last thing you think about before you fall asleep is “I can’t believe I have to get up in six hours; I’m gonna be exhausted”, then you’re going to be exhausted when you wake up.  The key is to consciously decide your intentions for the next day to actively and mindfully create a positive expectation for the next morning.

If you haven’t done this already, then you should move your alarm clock as far away from the bed as you can.  This will force you to rise from the bed, which is just the energy boost that you need.  If you keep your alarm clock within reach of your arm, then you’re probably going to hit the snooze button a whole lot.

After you turn on your alarm clock, go right over to the bathroom to brush your teeth and splash some water on your face.  Activities like this can increase your motivation to wake up and seize the day.  You should also drink a full glass of water every morning, since you might be dehydrated when you wake up, which could cause fatigue.  When people are feeling tired, they often just need more water, not sleep.

So you’re ready to leave your bedroom, you should dress in your exercise clothes, so that way you’ll be ready to leave your bedroom.  Some people like to start their day by jumping into the shower, but others believe you should break a sweat first.  The writer of the article speaks of how from his point of view, morning exercise helps him maximize his potential by putting him in a “peak mental, physical and emotional state”.
